How to Search Civil Dockets
Alacourt ACCESS, also called Just One Look, is the official paid route into Greene County civil docket material. Coverage runs from Civil Records and Small Claims Records to Domestic Relations and Child Support. A search by name or case number costs $9.99 and comes with one case detail. Use the exact case number when you have it. That avoids mix-ups with common names and extra detail purchases.
There is no free Greene County civil portal. The full sweep covers Just One Look, the Alacourt.com subscription, the Circuit Clerk by phone, counter, or mail, and any courthouse terminal the clerk confirms. Probate matters belong to the Judge of Probate instead. Follow these steps:
- Identify Circuit civil, District civil, small claims, domestic relations, child support, or Probate Court.
- Copy the exact case number from a notice or filing when possible.
- Search Just One Look and confirm Greene County, the court, and case type before buying detail.
- Read actions and rulings in date order, then scan for later settings and post-judgment events.
- Call the Circuit Clerk at (205) 372-3598 for an old file, missing image, or certified copy.
Greene Civil Docket Courts
Greene County Circuit Court carries the general-jurisdiction civil and domestic-relations caseload. Small claims, lower-value civil work, and assigned child-support matters sit in District Court. No official Greene page lists the monetary limits. Confirm current ones with the clerk and current Alabama law. Probate Court stands apart. It is a statutory court for estates, guardianships, conservatorships, adoptions, and other probate business.
| Court | Civil docket | Record custodian |
|---|---|---|
| Circuit Court | General civil and domestic relations | Greene County Circuit Clerk |
| District Court | Small claims, other lower civil, child support | Greene County Circuit Clerk |
| Probate Court | Estates, guardianships, adoptions, statutory probate matters | Judge of Probate |
Ask the wrong office and you may get a false "no result." The Circuit Clerk and the Probate Judge both operate from the courthouse in Eutaw. Their Greene County civil records stay legally separate, though.
What a Civil Docket Shows
The Case Action Summary serves as the docket-level index. Alacourt advertises party details, actions and rulings, court setting dates, costs, and document images. Its landing page does not list every Greene civil field. Judge assignments and service detail go deeper. So do the amount demanded, lawyer identification, judgment interest, and garnishment fields. Those should come from an authorized report or a clerk copy rather than guesswork.
| Case identity | Case number, court, county, and civil type in the case detail. |
|---|---|
| Party roles | Plaintiff and defendant, or petitioner and respondent, where public. |
| Actions and rulings | Complaint, service-related events, motions, orders, and judgment activity. |
| Settings | Court dates, with later entries checked for changes. |
| Financial information | Costs or balances, not necessarily a current judgment payoff. |
| Attachments | Available pleadings or orders sold separately as portal images. |
A docket entry only proves the event was entered. For full content, pull the filed pleading or the signed order itself.
Greene Civil Docket Portal
Just One Look charges $9.99 for a name or case-number search. That search includes one case detail. Each added case detail from a name result costs another $9.99. Document images run $5 for the first 20 pages. Then it is $0.50 per page after that. Those are portal fees only, separate from any Circuit Clerk certification charge. The clerk publishes no Greene County plain-copy, certified-copy, search, or turnaround fee schedule.
For appeals in many civil and domestic matters, use the Alabama Court of Civil Appeals. It is the official source.
That appellate court handles review, not trials. The Greene County civil docket itself stays with the Circuit Clerk and the statewide trial-court products.
Types of Civil Cases on the Docket
A Greene County civil docket carries many case types. These include general civil claims, domestic-relations cases, small claims, other District civil matters, and child-support activity. The FY2022 AOC profile put civil filings at 37% of the 166 Circuit total, with domestic at 14%. District Court logged 5% small claims, 2% other civil, and 1% child support within 2,534 filings. Counts estimated from those shares are not official totals.
Civil and probate are not the same thing. A contract or tort claim may land in Circuit or District Court. An estate or guardianship goes through Probate Court. Adoption also sits in probate and carries strong confidentiality limits. The caption or filing type does not always make the route clear. Ask the clerk which court holds the record.
Note: No official Greene County source published current civil monetary thresholds. Confirm case allocation before filing.
Greene Civil Docket Volume
The FY2022 filing mix gives scale, not a prediction of any case's pace. Circuit Court took in 166 filings. Civil made up 37% and domestic 14%. District Court received 2,534 filings. Of those, 5% were small claims, 2% other civil, and 1% child support. Those shares come from the official AOC profile, and any rounded counts derived from them are only estimates.
These numbers explain why a Greene County civil docket search cannot stop at general Circuit civil. Domestic, small-claims, other District civil, and child-support records sit with their assigned court. Each carries its own access limits too.
Greene Civil Filing and Service
A complaint or petition opens a civil matter. Filing alone does not prove service. After the initiating filing, look for summons and service entries. Then watch for an answer, a default event, or a motion. A default judgment is a real judgment. It is entered after a failure to defend as the rules require. It does not spring up merely because an answer deadline passed.
Keep a motion and an order separate in your reading. A motion requests action. An order records what the judge did. Allegations deserve the same care, since claims in a complaint are not judicial findings. That habit keeps a Greene County civil docket reader from mistaking one party's filing for the outcome of the case.
Settings and Hearings on Civil Dockets
Alacourt's paid Case Action Summary advertises court setting dates. Greene County civil dockets change, though. A continuance, a reset, or a later order can replace the first date, so scan every action and ruling after it. The hearing type matters as well. A motion hearing addresses a single request, a pretrial conference narrows or prepares the issues, and a docket call checks readiness without always being the trial.
- Reset or continuance
- A setting moved to another date; look for the later entry.
- Order
- The court’s written direction or decision on an issue.
- Judgment
- An operative decision that may resolve all or part of the case.
- DWOP
- Dismissed for want of prosecution, though no Greene-specific code list confirms that label appears online.
A Greene County setting with no time, room, judge, or hearing type calls for one thing. Call the clerk at (205) 372-3598. Clerk staff will report what the record says, but they cannot advise a party on how to litigate.
Greene Civil Docket Judgments
A docket's last visible step is not the outcome. Find the final judgment, dismissal, or other dispositive order first. Then read everything filed after it. A motion to alter or amend, a notice of appeal, a writ, a garnishment, a satisfaction, or revived activity can follow what looked like the end. Even endings differ. A voluntary dismissal, a dismissal for want of prosecution, a default judgment, a summary judgment, an agreed order, and a trial judgment each carry a distinct meaning.
Exact terms call for the document itself. Pull the title and date from the Case Action Summary, then buy an available portal image or request the signed order from the Circuit Clerk. A web image is not automatically certified. For certification, give the clerk the case number, the document title, the filing date if known, and the copy count, then ask about the current fee, payment method, pickup or mail process, and turnaround.
Greene Civil Docket Images
The Case Action Summary can list a pleading that has no image for sale. Copy the title first. Add the entry date. Check for a later attachment or amended filing before giving up. Ask the Circuit Clerk next whether the document is public, scanned, paper-only, sealed, or withheld from internet access. A missing image does not erase the docket event.
If the clerk can supply it, choose inspection, a plain copy, or a certified copy based on the need. Certification comes from the custodian, not the paid portal. For a transcript, ask for the court reporter contact. The reporter prepares it, not the clerk, and that keeps the Greene County civil docket index, filed documents, certified copies, and hearing transcripts in their proper layers.
Public Access to Civil Dockets
A public case does not put everything online. Some Greene County material stays offline. Domestic-relations and child-support information may be limited. A sealed filing can sit inside a public case shell, and a redacted version may be the only copy the public sees. Alabama Code §36-12-40 grants inspection and copy rights for public writings subject to exceptions, while judicial rules govern court-record privacy.
Civil privacy rules:
Alabama Rule of Civil Procedure 5.1 places redaction duties on the filer and permits sealing or limits on internet access.
Court-Record Privacy Rules 301–303 protect identifiers and allow sealing, unsealing, or a redacted public version.
A formal public-record request cannot override a sealing order. It cannot reach a confidential record category either. Start with the court custodian, who can separate an inspectable file, a paid copy, and a restricted item.
Greene Civil Docket Boundaries
Adoption records show why record type matters. They fall under Probate Court's statutory work. The ordinary Circuit civil docket does not carry them. Alabama law seals completed adoption records and limits access unless a statute or court order allows it. No broad civil search should be expected to reveal them.
The official Alabama adoption record provision sets out that boundary in full.
That provision explains a practical point too. A missing probate record may reflect lawful confidentiality rather than a failed Greene County civil search.
Older Greene Civil Dockets
No official start date exists for complete electronic coverage of Greene County civil dockets. Older cases may still exist. Check the court, the spelling, the exact case number, and the filing year when a case is missing. Then ask the Circuit Clerk. The file may sit in paper, on microfilm, in a bound docket, or in off-site storage. An archive search takes time. It may also carry an unpublished fee. The Alabama Department of Archives and History is only a fallback once the clerk confirms a transfer.
The clerk sits at the William M. Branch Courthouse, 400 Morrow Avenue, Eutaw, Alabama 35462. Mail goes to P.O. Box 307. Call (205) 372-3598 before a visit to confirm hours, access rules, payment, and terminal availability. The Greene County case search page maps the broader lookup path, while the clerk remains the source for the file and certification.
